A Salute to Veterans Day (#102)
November 10, 2006

In A Salute to Veterans Day, Assignment Iowa profiles Jaymie Holschlag, a New Hampton woman who served as a medic for a bomb-hunting squad in Iraq. Holschlag, who now works at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, has re-enlisted for another six years.

Also featured is Joe Gottschalk, an Iraq War veteran from Tipton who was shot in the head after the truck he was driving was hit by a roadside IED. Gottschalk, who was attending to fellow soldier and Iowan Aaron Sissel when medics arrived, did not realize he’d been hit. Sissel did not survive the attack. Now recovered from his injuries, Gottschalk wants to return to what he considers an unfinished job.

The program also features a studio discussion of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and the veterans who suffer from it.
