African Americans have always served the U.S. military. These brave black warriors fought two fights – they fought for their lives against a deadly enemy and for their rights against a society that demanded their service but for decades refused them full citizenship. Discover the proud history of African American men and women in the U.S. military from the Revolutionary War to the present. Learn about African American Iowans in the Civil War, the important right African American males gained in Iowa by the end of the war and much more.
