School to Careers Event
STEM: Careers in Technology and Agriculture
Subject Areas:
    Careers/Vocational Education

Your students may think that folks with agriculture degrees are limited to careers on the farm or in the fields, covered in dirt every day. They may also believe that a degree in computer science will land them in “Dilbert-land” full of despair, alone in cubicle banging out code all day. Help dispel these misconceptions and bring your students to this session to learn about exciting high-tech careers where agricultural scientists and software developers unite to deliver cutting-edge solutions that help feed the world.

Enter the Director of Field Research Information Management Group at DuPont Pioneer. In his position, he is responsible for leading software development, software support, and data management for Pioneer product development scientists located in 25 countries worldwide. He has a bead on where the jobs are and what they are… and he wants to help your students understand how technology is used in the industry. More importantly, there are outstanding career opportunities available!

During this session, he will share some important points with your students including:

-The fact is that the agriculture industry as a whole is booming, and it has gone high tech. Technologies including field automation, molecular markers, and predictive analytics have driven an explosion of data. An army of scientists and software developers are needed to leverage this data to deliver superior products that increase the productivity and profitability of farmers worldwide. He has added over 100 people to his division alone over the past 4 years, and all indications are that growth will continue.

-He will talk about what makes a good candidate for a career in this field and what students may be doing now and while in college to explore and prepare.

-He’ll cover the types of careers in the tech industry related to agriculture and how a hire can work just about any place in the world!

He will share his perspectives on what it takes to make a candidate’s resume float to the top of the pile and what skills will ensure success within the private industry.
