Healthy Living: On the Monday, January 7 edition of The Iowa Journal

January 4, 2008

(Johnston, Iowa) – Monday’s episode of The Iowa Journal will explore efforts to help Iowans get and stay in shape. The program airs Monday, January 7 at 6:30 p.m. It will be rebroadcast Friday, January 11 at 9:00 p.m. on statewide IPTV-Plus and will also be available online at Iptv.org.

Health experts say that 30 minutes of walking a day is as important as an apple in “keeping the doctor away.” How can Iowans encourage themselves to get and stay in shape? This episode of The Iowa Journal asks these questions to fitness consultant Tim Lane, of the Iowa Department of Public Health. The show also looks at how corporate incentives play roles in a healthy community.  Mark Fenton, of the PBS program, America’s Walking joins the program to speak about planning for health by building mixed purpose communities that encourage walking and biking. The episode also visits Ames, where a “Walking School Bus” takes kids safely to and from their schools as part of a National Department of Transportation project.
