Stanley "Tookie" Williams (#593)
Tavis Smiley will air a conversation with former gang leader and death row inmate Stanley "Tookie" Williams. The interview will be taped in Tavis' radio studio with Mr. Williams on the phone from San Quentin prison, where no cameras are allowed. Mr. Williams is scheduled to die by lethal injection on December13th unless Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger intervenes. Williams was the co-founder in 1971 of the Los Angeles Crips gang. In 1981 he was convicted of murdering four people during two robberies and sentenced to death row at San Quentin state prison. Williams deeply regrets his gang involvement but has always maintained his innocence of these crimes. While on death row, Williams has written 9 highly acclaimed children's books that educate young people to avoid gangs, crime and incarceration. He has also worked to end gang violence through his peace protocol and Internet project for street peace, an international peer-mentoring program. He has recently published his memoir, Blue Rage, Black Redemption, which has been nominated for a James Madison book award. His work has resulted in multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace and literature prizes. This summer the President of the United States recognized William's work when he received a presidential award for his volunteer work to help youth. Stan's story was also recently made into a television movie, "Redemption: the Stan Tookie Williams story, " starring Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx. [26 minutes]

This afternoon Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will sit for an exclusive conversation with television and radio host Tavis Smiley. It's the only interview Mr. Chavez is granting with the U.S. English-speaking broadcast media. The conversation will air on "Tavis Smiley" on PBS on Friday night, as well as this weekend on "The Tavis Smiley Show" radio program distributed by PRI, Public Radio International. "Throughout my career I have welcomed the opportunity to talk with world leaders, some celebrated, some controversial about leadership, and unique perspectives on democracy". said Tavis Smiley. "I look forward to engaging President Chavez on the issues that have made him an important, provocative and at times polemical figure in Latin America and throughout the world." Topics expected to be covered in the conversation are Chavez's anti-Bush comments, his role as "the people's president" in Venezuela, the progress of his socialist policies since taking power and his role on the world stage.
